The Marine Science Course is a 4-week academic program for current high school students interested in pursuing studies or a career in marine science. Students live at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and are immersed in the wide variety of fields and topics in marine science, and participate in more 150 hours of academic activities. Lectures, projects, laboratory investigations, field explorations, research and more give students an in-depth look at marine science. Field activities include the exploration of a salt marsh community, beach profiling, reef fishing and trawling aboard the Dauphin Island Sea Lab's 65-foot research vessel. Students will observe and work with such gear as a shrimp trawl, bottom dredges, plankton nets, seine nets, water sampling bottles, refractometers and water quality test kits. Panel discussion with marine science professionals provide first-hand information about pathways and career options.
